Liszt: Legends of the Saints, Vol. 2

Info

This second CD of the “Legends of the Saints” edition features further works by Franz Liszt with a connection to the saints, most of which were written in the later years of his life. Among the larger works from this period, Liszt’s third, unfinished oratorio St. Stanislaus (S. 688) stands out in particular. One of the completed movements, “Salve Polonia” (S. 113), is an extensive orchestral piece which Liszt intended as a purely instrumental interlude for St. Stanislaus – comparable to the “Song of the Shepherds at the Manger” and the “Three Kings” in his second oratorio, Christus, completed in 1866. A first version of the movement dates back to 1869.
