Mahler: ‘Des Knaben Wunderhorn’ Japan Recitals

On July 21 and 22, Thomas Hampson performs selections from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn in Tokyo and Niigata, Japan, under the baton of Jaap van Zweden. The program features ‘Rheinlegendchen,’ ‘Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen,’ ‘Revelge,’ ‘Der Tamboursg’sell,’ and ‘Urlicht,’ paired with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 (‘Titan’).

Hampson is acclaimed as a preeminent Mahler interpreter. Seen and Heard International described the Wunderhorn songs as “small operas in miniature where the singer is portraying various roles,” observing that Hampson “revelled in them and showed worlds of depth and imagination.” Hampson has recorded Des Knaben Wunderhorn twice, offering acclaimed interpretations of both the original piano settings and the orchestral versions.
