Excerpts from ‘Nixon in China’ with the Boston Symphony Orchestra

This spring, Thomas Hampson brings his “commanding and vulnerable” (Theatre in Paris) portrayal of Richard Nixon in Adams’ Nixon in China to audiences in Boston and New York, where he will join Andris Nelsons, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus for excerpts from Adams’ masterful score.

Hampson sings alongside acclaimed soprano Renée Fleming as Pat Nixon, with whom he recently performed the work at Opéra Bastille. Of their 2023 performances in Paris, they were praised as the opera’s “most stellar cast ever” by OperaWire. Their 2026 performances also earned rave reviews, with Opera Today saying, “Most impressive is [Fleming’s] evident affection for Thomas Hampson’s suave Nixon, the chemistry truly believable…Hampson is in his element, urbane and polished vocally, making light of his big ‘News’ aria with no sense of strain when confronting the upper reaches of this high baritone part.”

Nelsons will also lead the orchestra in Dvořák’s beloved New World Symphony, an apt complement to Adams’ utterly American opera. Hampson, Fleming and the BSO will perform at Boston’s Symphony Hall on March 26-28 and at New York’s Carnegie Hall on April 9
