Mahler in Shenzhen and Macao

Thomas Hampson returns to China this October, reuniting with longtime collaborator Wolfram Rieger for recitals in Shenzhen and Macau. The all-Mahler program features music from the composer’s folktale-inspired Des Knaben Wunderhorn, which Hampson has performed to great acclaim, both in recital and with orchestra. He has long been linked with Mahler’s music, and is “not just one of the composer’s leading interpreters, but a scholar, editor, and forensic detective of the microscopic detail of his original scores and first editions” (Guardian).

Hampson and Rieger appear at the 2025 Shenzhen “Belt & Road” International Music Festival Liederabend on October 14, followed by a performance at the Macao International Music Festival on October 16.

Hampson has appeared on several albums of Mahler’s music, including Des Knaben Wunderhorn. He recorded the original piano setting alongside pianist Geoffrey Parsons in 2006, later recording the orchestral version with the Wiener Virtuosen, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the composer’s passing in 2011.
