The music of Charles Ives in Hanover

On June 8, Thomas Hampson appears at the KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen, singing under the baton of the festival’s artistic director, Ingo Metzmacher. The celebratory concert is the grand finale of Metzmacher’s tenure, and will feature orchestral pieces, songs, and choral works by maverick American composer Charles Ives. In a special guest appearance, Hampson will perform some of Ives’ most beloved art songs, appearing alongside the NDR Radio Philharmonic, the University Orchestra of Hanover’s Hanover Music Hall, and nine Hanover choirs.

One of the most fascinating composers of the early 20th century, Ives is a pioneer of contemporary American music, blending tradition and innovation, creating avant-garde music that remains deeply rooted in American culture. Metzmacher will frame his farewell concert with Ives’ orchestral piece, The Unanswered Question
