Mahler and more with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra

On May 9 and 10, Thomas Hampson brings his acclaimed interpretation of Gustav Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Lead by conductor Andrey Boreyko, Hampson sings selections from the song cycle, in a program that includes pieces by Alexander Zemlinsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Hampson has previously recorded the piano version of the Des Knaben Wunderhorn, accompanied by Geoffrey Parsons; a performance lauded as “sweetly spiritual” by James Leonard.

The evening opens with the haunting dreamlike image of Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead and draws to a close with Zemlinsky’s shimmering The Mermaid, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s evocative fairytale.

On May 8th, Hampson will host a masterclass, coaching advanced young vocalists in front of an audience. Ticket information can be found on the VSO School of Music’s website.
