Brahms’ ‘Ernste Gesänge’ and more with the Würth Philharmonic

Thomas Hampson returns to the Würth Philharmonic on March 22, singing a program of Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert, and Felix Mendelssohn. Several of the concert selections appear on the recent recording Hampson made with the Würth Philharmonic, now available from Hänssler Classic, which was praised as “remarkable in many respects” by Das Opernglas.

Brahms’ Ernste Gesänge (Serious Songs) in an orchestral arrangement, and expanded with four preludes by Detlev Glanert, are the cornerstone of the program. Completed on Brahms’ 63rd birthday in May 1896, Ernste Gesänge sets texts from both the Old and New Testaments. Hampson and the orchestra, under the baton of Claudio Vandelli, will also perform songs by Franz Schubert in arrangements by Brahms, as well as Brahms’ Haydn Variations and two concert overtures by Felix Mendelssohn.
