Premiere of Rufus Wainwright’s ‘Hadrian’ in Spain

Thomas Hampson stars as the title role of Rufus Wainwright’s Hadrian on July 27 at Teatro Real de Madrid and July 29 at Festival Castell Peralada. Marking the European premiere of the work, the concert performances will be conducted by Scott Dunn.

Hampson premiered Hadrian in 2018 at the Canadian Opera Company, garnering rave reviews for his “gloriously full, multihued baritone whose warmth and expressivity were ideal for establishing Hadrian as a sympathetic character” (Opera News).

Joining Mr. Hampson onstage is a fantastic cast, including Alexandra Urquiola as Plotina, Santiago Ballerini as Antinous, Christian Federici as Turbo, Vanessa Goikoetxea as Sabina, Alejandro del Cerro as Trajan, Vicenç Esteve as Fabius, and Gregory Dahl as Hermogenes, among others.
