Schubert Lieder with the Orchester Wiener Akademie
This week, Thomas Hampson joins the Orchester Wiener Akademie to sing orchestral versions of selected Schubert songs arranged by Franz Liszt, Jacques Offenbach, Johannes Brahms, and Anton von Webern. Under the baton of Martin Haselböck, performances take place on October 9 at the Brucknerhaus Linz, part of the Brucknerfest, and on October 13 at the Musikverein, marking the ensemble’s first concert of the season at the Musikverein.
Mr. Hampson sings select Schubert songs orchestrated by Franz Liszt, Jacques Offenbach, Johannes Brahms, and Anton von Webern, in which these four masters of instrumentation unite the intimate character of the art song with symphonic sound splendor. Maestro Haselböck leads the ensemble in Bruckner’s Vier Orchesterstücke, four short orchestral pieces that Bruckner composed during his studies with Otto Kitzler in Linz. Concluding with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 4, aptly described as the “Wagner Symphony” because it draws instrumentation and harmonic influence from Tannhäuser.
