Thomas Hampson and Antonio Pappano reunite for their second Verdi opera of the summer, this time at the world-renowned Salzburg Festival, where the baritone makes six appearances as Rodrigo in a new production of Don Carlo from venerable German director Peter Stein. German tenor Jonas Kaufmann sings the title role, with soprano Anja Harteros – the first German to win the Cardiff Singer of the World competition – as Elisabetta di Valois. All performances of Don Carlo at the Salzburg festival are sold-out, but the production will be seen across Europe and virtually around the world, with television broadcasts, screenings in movie theaters, and, on August 16, a free live webcast on medici.tv (see below for further details/air dates).

Hampson’s many previous collaborations with Pappano include an acclaimed EMI Classics DVD/CD set of Don Carlo, which was recorded live at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

Earlier this summer, Pappano led Hampson and a distinguished cast in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra at London’sRoyal Opera House, Covent Garden, and in a concert performance at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. Reviewing the production for The Times, Hillary Finch observed:

“There could scarcely be a finer tribute to Verdi in his bicentenary year…seldom has that score sounded more ravishing… Antonio Pappano’s love for this most subtle of scores, and his empathy with his singers, is palpably felt in every moment….Thomas Hampson takes on the title role for the first time at Covent Garden.
