In Summer Rich in Verdi, Thomas Hampson Turns Briefly to Wagner

After a critically-acclaimed run of performances in the title role of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra at London’s Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, under the direction of Antonio Pappano, Thomas Hampson heads to Munich, where he will perform the role of Amfortas in Wagner’s Parsifal at the Bavarian State Opera.  The single performance will take place on July 31 under the direction of Kent Nagano.  This fall, Hampson will encore the role – one the New York Times has called a Hampson “specialty” – in the United States, beginning in Washington, D.C. with concert performances of Act III of Parsifal with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Christoph Eschenbach (October 10 – 12).  The following month, Hampson returns to Wagner’s last completed opera once again in a new production by John Caird at Lyric Opera of Chicago conducted by Sir Andrew Davis (November 9 – 29).
