Hampson Opens Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s New Season

Thomas Hampson is back in the U.S. where he opens the new season of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra with three concerts (September 21 – 23) featuring the orchestral songs of Richard Strauss.  Music Director Manfred Honeck conducts a program that also includes the German composer’s Horn Concerto No. 1 and Dvorak’s ever-popular Symphony “From the New World.”  Music by Dvorak was on the program that last brought Hampson together with Honeck and the orchestra.  Last winter, Hampson sang the Czech composer’s “Biblical Songs” as well as Brahms’s powerful “German Requiem.” In a review for Pittsburgh’s Post-Gazette, Andrew Druckenbrod called Hampson “a singer of uncommon and unyielding artistry,” noting, “Like tenor Placido Domingo’s, Mr. Hampson’s voice is just as capable and arresting as it has been his entire career, his oaken hue just as mystifying in its attractiveness. It’s the sort of voice you’d like to hear all night long.” Hampson discusses his passion for classical art song with Druckenbrod in a preview of this weekend’s concert:
