For student performers, the masterclass poses a daunting challenge. Not only must they play for an expert in their given instrument, but also instruction is given in front of an audience. So the pressure was on this spring for the students gathered at the Manhattan School of Music for a masterclass in orchestral performance given by the baritone Thomas Hampson.
